Why is this piece your Trace Fossil?
“I submitted the suite of works of which this piece is a part to Trace Fossils Review because I’m very much speaking here about traces, about layers of thought and process leaving their mark.
So much of my work revolves around memory and its mutability. Here, I’m juxtaposing ancient design and deliberate abstraction, making a space for narrative with layers of paint and ink held apart from each other by wax, traditionally a material that preserves. An element of gold often appears in my work, and this is my way of referencing apartness, of a space or moment we might try to define or enshrine, but which will slip away, leaving us with memory.”
J G Orudjev is a collage artist and painter living in Frederick MD. She has a background in sculpture and printmaking, and a deep love of craft.
Her work explores the nature of memory, transformative and transitory states, and the act and language of making meaning. Collage is uniquely suited to this path because it is fundamentally reflective of the ways we construct narrative from association—the strata of image and context that provide the basis for our private archetypes, our visual language.
J G Orudjev’s work has appeared in print both domestically and internationally, has been selected by jury to show in galleries throughout the United States, and is part of several private collections. She also works on a commission basis, and has completed projects ranging from illustrated texts to music album covers.
J G Orudjev is a member of a cooperative gallery, and there she fulfills a roll as a member coordinator. Additionally, she works as an artistic and curatorial consultant to a regionally recognized framer and gallerist.
